Infinitives to Plus verb

Finite and Non Finite Verbs: A verb that has a subject and shows tense, person and number is called a finite verb. A verb that has no subject, and does not show person or number is called a non-finite verb. For example,

  •  I live in New Delhi. (Finite Verb)
  •  I love to go to the mall. (Non Finite Verb)
  • Type of non-finite verbs  : Infinitives, Participles and Gerunds. ( Verbs ending in -ing and having the features of a noun and  a verb are called Gerunds.)

Infinitives : Non-finite Verbs that use 'to' before them are called infinitives. For Example:.

  •  I want to sing.
  •  She wants to improve her English.
  • In these sentences, the verb want is the finite verb. To sing and to improve are the infinitives. Infinitives are also called the to-verb because to is often used to form an infinitive. But the word 'to' is not an essential part of the Infinitive. See, sit, play are also infinitives. These are called Pure Infinitives or Infinitives without to.

The infinitives with to is used:

  • As subject to a verb: Example : To rise early is a good habit.
  • As object to a transitive verb: Example : He wished to deceive me.
  • as object to a preposition:  Example : The train is about to leave.
  • To qualify a verb to express purpose, cause or manner:  Example :
  • He went to buy sweets.(purpose)
  • She laughed to hear that I have topped the list.(cause)
